Tutorial 4 - Adding a Bassline.

...The sequencer is for melody too.

We'll now add a synthesiser to create a bassline.

Tap on the mixer button (or from the Views menu, select Mixer) to go to the mixer Screen.

Tap and hold on a blank area of the mixer to bring up the mixer context menu.

Select Add Instrument to bring up the instrument list.

Tap on the mSyn and then the OK button to select the mSyn instrument. A new mixer channel will be created for the mSyn.

Double tap on the mSyn label strip to bring up the mSyn Instrument Screen...

Tip:

We haven't really got any need to go here, I just wanted to show you the mSyn screen.

It's a beauty isn't it ?

We'll change some of these parameters shortly but for now we'll just create a new pattern to play some notes.

Go to the Section Editor by tapping on the Views menu and selecting Section Editor...

Tip:

  • Tapping on the button closes the current Screen and takes you back to the last Screen (in this case the mixer). Think of these Screens as a pack of cards. Whenever you display one Screen it gets brought to the front of the pack, whenever you press the button it gets sent to the back of the pack and the previous Screen is displayed. The Views menu lists the Screens in the order they hold in the pack.

Two new rows have been added to the Section Editor for the mSyn.

Tap and hold on the Pattern Factory Button and select Empty template, then tap and drag a new pattern from the Pattern Factory into the bottom mSyn row.

Tip:

  • The pattern factory comes with some default mSyn patterns that we could have used but we're going to get creative instead.

The section editor Screen should now look like this.

Double tap on the newly created pattern labelled mSyn...

We'll change the default Note Factory Velocity.

Tap and hold on the Note Factory Button and select Velocity from the context menu and 100 from the sub menu.

Now start dragging notes onto the pattern grid from the Note Factory.

It's easy to get a feel for how you are doing if you have the pattern playing whilst you are dragging notes into the pattern. Because the pattern is looping you can quicky hear the results of your changes.

Remember:
To change the length of the note, Tap and drag on the small yellow rectange on the right edge of the note.
To move the note about, tap in the red rectangle and drag it.
To delete the note, Tap and drag the note back onto the Note Factory Button .
To change the velocity (Volume) of a note tap and hold in the red rectangle to display the velocity slider....

Once you're happy with your basic pattern we'll change some parameters. Tap on the view menu and select mSyn to bring up the mSyn instrument Screen...

Tip:

  • The mSyn is a monophonic synthesiser - This means it can only play one note at a time. If two notes overlap the mSyn will Glide from the pitch of the first note to the pitch of the second. This is a good effect.
  • You can change the default note length by using the Note Factory Context Menu.

The Instrument Screen is where you shape your sound.

Tap and drag up on the Freq knob (located at the top left of the filter section), you should hear a pleasant change in the tone of the sound.

Try changing any of the knobs to create your own sound.

Tip:

  • Load a preset by tap and holding in a blank area of the screen and select Load Preset from the context menu.
  • If you accidentally double tap on a knob or button the parameter editor Screen will be displayed. To close this just tap on the OK button .

Right, We've got the beat, we've got the bassline. You should have all the skills at your disposal to create your first masterpiece.

The rest of these tutorials are advanced techniques:
The next tutorial is all about automating parameters.
